Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE)

Resources and tools for candidates seeking to complete the Integrated National Board Dental Examination.

The Integrated National Board Dental Examination is a high-stakes licensure examination requiring candidates to use their clinical skills to successfully complete one or more dental problem-solving tasks. This two-day examination is designed to provide information to U.S. dental boards seeking to determine whether licensure candidates have the necessary level of clinical skills to safely practice entry-level dentistry.

National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE)

The National Board Dental Hygiene Examination assists dental boards in evaluating the qualifications of dental hygienists for licensure. The examination will assess each candidate’s ability to understand important information from basic biomedical and dental hygiene sciences and apply this information in a problem-solving context.

The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) is the governing body for the NBDHE, working in collaboration with the Department of Testing Services (DTS). Candidates will take the examination at test centers operated by Pearson VUE, an official vendor of the JCNDE and the DTS.

The NBDHE is intended to fulfill or partially fulfill the written examination requirement for licensure in all states. Please refer to each state board’s website for specific details, clarifications, and updated policies.

Dental Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Examination (DLOSCE™)

The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) is the governing body for the DLOSCE, working in collaboration with the Department of Testing Services (DTS). Candidates take the examination at test centers operated by Prometric, an official vendor of the JCNDE and the DTS.

Dental Hygiene Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Exam (DHLOSCE™)

The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) is working to develop the new Dental Hygiene Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Examination, which is expected to launch in the 4th quarter of 2025. The purpose of this examination is to help dental licensing boards determine whether candidates have the level of clinical judgment and skills required to safely practice entry-level dental hygiene.

As a valid and reliable examination developed by professionals, the DHLOSCE will assess whether candidates can apply clinical knowledge and skills in a problem-solving context. This will be a national examination with identical content for candidates in all states and regions of the country. Content will be determined through utilization of a dental hygiene practice analysis.
